How to Change Unhealthy Habits

Unhealthy Habits

Changing an unhealthy habit is easier said than done! If you have ever eaten too much junk food, knowing that it is bad for you, you are not alone! We all have unhealthy habits that are difficult to break. Whether it’s not exercising regularly or drinking too much coffee, there are a few ways in which you can break these habits for good.

Firstly, you need to identify your unhealthy habit. Identify it and write it down, and then make a decision to change this habit.

The next step is to decide what you will replace this bad habit with. There is no use in saying you will stop cold turkey – you need a plan of action! For example, if you eat when you aren’t even hungry, try and replace this behavior with some deep breathing for a few minutes. Repeat this a few times and, if you feel like eating afterward, by all means, eat (but you will probably decide not to)!

Removing triggers is a great way to break a bad habit. If, for instance, you would like to stop smoking, make sure that there are no cigarettes in your home, car or office. This way, you are less tempted to smoke!

Remember to take baby steps and not to put too much pressure on yourself when trying to change your behavior. If you’re trying to exercise more often, and you really don’t feel jogging on a certain day, make a compromise with yourself and jog for only 10 minutes. You are guaranteed to feel much better afterward, even if it’s a baby step!

Record your achievements in a journal and praise yourself when you achieve a milestone. If you judge yourself too harshly, you are simply allowing yourself to remain stuck in the same negative thought process.

In time, you should see a change for the better – just be patient!
